Why Choose Medically Supervised Weight Management (Weight Loss) Program?
- Millions of Americans struggle with weight management. Obesity is a disease that is taking over our country at an alarming rate.
- There is no US state where the obesity rate is less than 20%, and in Southern states it is close to 50%.
- The state of Alabama has an obesity rate of more than 40%, and in children it reaches 18%.
- Obesity has definitely become a public health crises. Weight gain is not something to take lightly because of what comes with it:
type 2 diabetes, hypertension, infertility, osteoarthritis, cardio-vascular diseases and sleep apnea. - The extra weight also increases the chance of more than 40% of cancers.
The weight management guidelines were developed by the American Obesity Association ( AOA) and former US Surgeon General, Dr. C. Everett Koop’s anti-obesity campaign.
The treatment guidelines were reviewed and approved by leading obesity experts, and major public health, nutrition and medical organizations around the country. It defines obesity as a public health crisis that should be met through physician and healthcare provider intervention and treatment, especially for patients whose weight puts them at risk for health problems such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, infertility and certain cancers.
I am Dr. Liliya Slutsker and I have been working with these patients first hand in primary care for many years. It is a difficult task for many primary care doctors to address a patient’s weight problem in a regular office setting for many reasons: most patients make primary visits to address a symptom of obesity rather than the root cause of these weight related health problems, or the weight issue is just too sensitive for some patients to discuss, and time in a primary care setting is often too short for doctors to adequately address all the information patients will need to successfully start and finish a weight management plan.
Because of these constraints for doctors in primary care, I felt compelled to address these health issues by starting a weight management clinic in my own neighborhood that allows me to help my friends and neighbors.
Our Comprehensive Program
Because no two patients are exactly alike, our weight management programs are tailored to each individual patient. According to each patient’s weight loss needs, our programs can be structured with weight loss tools like; special meal plans, pharmaceutical medication coordinated along with meal programs, identifying and solving different issues with food addiction, identifying slow metabolism, treating chronic health issues, learning behavior modification material and physical activity and exercise materials.
Weight Management Program Phases
Screening
The screening phase consists of various medical, laboratory and psychological tests to ensure that each patient is both medically and psychologically able to participate in our weight management program.
Reducing
The reducing phase is used to help patients lose weight under medical supervision, utilizing meal replacements exclusively, or grocery food plus meal replacements, or grocery food and protein supplements between meals. These tightly structured formats provide healthy nutrition and allow for safe and effective weight loss while reducing high calorie, high fat, high carbohydrate food choices. Eliminating or reducing food choices while learning to change eating behaviors is the key to this phase. Once a patient’s past destructive eating behaviors are pinpointed and changed, the patient will be better able to handle long-term weight management.
Adapting
Once the patient has successfully lost the excess weight, the adapting phase is introduced. In the adapting phase, more healthy meal choices and a variety of foods are slowly but progressively introduced back into the patient’s diet over a four to eight week period.
This phase prepares the body physically for long-term food processing as well as mentally for the behavioral and lifestyle changes necessary for life long weight maintenance.
Maintenance
In the Maintenance Phase, the patient will return to traditional eating patterns. The protein supplements or meal replacements will be slowly phased out, or used once or twice daily as a maintenance tool.
Strategies to prevent weight regain are discussed and reinforced for long term weight loss maintenance. Relapse prevention plans and practical tips for weight loss management are utilized in the maintenance phase. During this phase, it is important for the patient to stay connected with the program where support, guidance, reinforcement and problem solving strategies are continually provided.
